Frank Fish was the head wrestling coach at Watford City High School from 1965-1988 where his teams won three  state championships (1972, 1973, 1974), five runners-up (1975, 1977, 1979, 1987, 1988), four thirds (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986), and two fourth place finishes (1976, 1978). Coach Fish amassed 264 dual wins which included a streak of 97 wins and one tie over six seasons and 59 tournament wins including 14 Badlands Conference team championships and 17 consecutive regional championships. Watford City recorded 29 individual state champions and 90 individual place winners at the state tournament during Coach Fish’s tenure as head coach. Coach Fish served as the president of the Class B wrestling coaches from 1973-1978 and twice was selected as the state’s coach of the year in 1973 and 1974. In 1977, 1985, and 1988 Coach Fish was nominated for the national coach of the year by the NDHSCA. Coach Fish was instrumental in the NDHSAA decision to begin seeding the state wrestling tournament and later was a co-author of the current seeding criteria used for the state tournament. In 1981, Frank was a team leader for the USA-AAU cultural exchange team to Germany, and in 1982, Frank was a team host to the Japanese cultural exchange team visiting North Dakota. Frank served as president of the North Dakota Wrestling Coaches Association for 5 years as well as being a member of the NDHSAA advisory board for 5 years. Frank received the Dickinson State University Blue Hawk Athletic Booster Club Outstanding Career Achievement Award in 1988. Following Frank’s retirement as head coach he returned to the Watford City program as an assistant coach in 1990 where he has continued to coach for the last 19 years. Frank and his wife sally have been married 45 years, and together they have four grown children: Laura, Terry, Mary and Janet, and eleven grandchildren.

Roger (The Voice) Loerch started announcing wrestling matches for Harvey High School during their last year of Class A in 1985. He was doing other sports at that time, but then Roger decided to ask the owner of KHND Radio if he could try announcing some live wrestling matches. The owner said, “What!!!” Roger said, “Let’s try it; if it doesn’t work you don’t owe me a thing.” That was the start of a great thing for the city of Harvey and the sport of wrestling. Roger was the first to broadcast the state wrestling tournament, first for Class A, and then Class B. Roger said it was lonely starting out as he had the broadcast booth to himself. Now you have to reserve a spot in advance as there are probably 8-12 broadcasters looking for and sharing a spot. Seeing other broadcasters starting to do state tournaments was awesome and Roger made friends with all of them. He also met many other people who have since become life-long friends, including coaches, referees, tournament officials, wrestlers, school personnel, and parents. Roger broadcast wrestling at the local, regional and state level for twenty years before health issues forced him to retire. “The Voice” still resides in Harvey and is married to his bride of 46 years, Maxine, who, Roger says, “Without her support I would never have had this chance.”
